33 Comments on Traffic Stacking Method Explained

  1. I’ve read all of Jason’s books. They all teach basic information that’s clear, concise and easily executable.

However after watching this video I’m confused. Isn’t “Traffic Stacking” just a newfangled term for marketing / marketing funnel? I get that as website owners we are responsible for our own traffic, no matter the platform, but I’m missing the point… What is so revolutionary about this concept? What am I missing?

    • Hi Cheri,

Good point! And you’re right – generating your own traffic isn’t a new topic – this is simply our take on it. I’d imagine veteran ecommerce sellers will find this pretty basic. However, I do think that having a method and tools that help you work in a logical way is somewhat new – at least I haven’t seen these types of tools before.

The reason I feel like it might be helpful to introduce the phrase and tools into the marketplace is so we can help people know how to take responsibility for their marketing funnel and traffic generation in a logical and strategic way. Most, or at least many, ecommerce sellers become frozen with a real sense of overwhelming confusion about where and how to start generating traffic. They don’t know where to start, so they don’t start. Literally thousands of people had thriving eBay businesses ten years ago – that now aren’t selling online because they left the traffic strategy to eBay and when it stopped working – they stopped working. I’d imagine if they had gotten the Traffic Stacking Method info and tools – and used it – they’d be happy the did.

I guess my Hope is that this concept will serve as a baby-steps type guide to get people going in an easy-to-implement way.

Thanks for your honesty and perspective!

      Jason

  2. I’m using Storenvy and Scott’s Marketplace (for local sales) in lieu of Etsy, but the same principles should apply.

Based on what I’ve seen thus far, I look forward to learning more about traffic stacking.

I’m getting ready to launch bags and wallets in my shop, so I appreciate the advice you have to offer.

    • Hi Hope,

Yep, I think these principles would apply to both Storenvy and Scott’s Marketplace – or any ecommerce site really. Glad you liked the ideas!

      Jason

  3. Just shared the video with my son. We are in business together. I find it frustrating that you show forms, and charts that I would love to see but i can’ thane them or the book to get started with, it just makes me more than a little annoyed. If you are making this into a book why can’t we buy a copy and get the transcript of the lesson? Learn and collect as we go?

    • Hi Phillip,

Glad you liked it – and I apologize if my approach on this was annoying – it certainly wasn’t my intention. My goal with this video was to get your feedback on the content. In some ways I’m still developing how best to present it online and trying to ensure I include content that people find helpful. I plan on making a better (more complete) training video on this in the future – as well as having the ebook and workbook available soon.

      Thanks for your honesty!

  4. Wow, Jason, that sure leaves me with lots to think about.

I have an Etsy store, Facebook page and just recently joined Pinterest. I can see the potential in Traffic Stacking. My challenge is how much time to spend at the computer and how much time to spend making the things I want to sell. I also have more items ready to sell than are on Etsy but may have an opportunity to sell at a Doll Fair in a few months time. I suppose I can do both.

I find Facebook easy to use and am getting used to Pinterest. I wonder if I am trying to do too many things at the same time. I am also wondering if I need to put more inventory on Etsy and slowly develop this strategy you have shared today?

You have certainly got me thinking.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

    Olivia

    • Hi Olivia,

Glad it was helpful! Good point – that’s really the biggest challenge for crafters and artisans – time management related to sales/marketing.

      Jason

  5. Great Stuff! The video really got me thinking about how to expand my business! Pinterest is new to me and I plan to investigate using this platform. Your video opened my eyes to new ways to market my products! Thanks!

  6. Thank you for such a comprehensive overview of “Traffic Stacking” which was a totally new concept for me. I have been selling on eBay for about 15 months now and am ready to expand, but had no idea how until I listened to your presentation. This is exciting and I can’t wait to implement your suggestions. Keep up the good work – you are such a trailblazer!!!
    Warmest Regards,
    Susan

    • Hi Susan,

Glad you found it helpful! Sounds like you’re in just the right spot to begin to take advantage of these ideas!

Keep us posted on how it goes!

      Jason

  7. Hi Jason! I found this to be very informative but also intimidating–at least for me. I’m very new to ecommerce–I just opened an etsy shop 2 days ago. It’s a whole new experience for me and there is so much to think about! I’ve been putting off opening my shop because I didn’t feel I knew enough about it but took your advice from another video about not letting what I don’t know stop me from starting! So I just jumped right in–eeek!

I’m learning as I go so this info is great! I want to take a stab at it, but what I find intimidating is that I’m not very computer savy so I am so easily overwhelmed by all the “to do” lists everyone recommends.

Yet, even for me this Traffic Stacking System makes a lot of sense and even if I can’t attempt all of it at once, I can at least try to apply what you’ve said in small pieces at a time. So thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and knowledge with those of us who are just beginning!

    Jaci

    • Hi Jaci,

Congrats on getting your store going!! Way to go! You’re right – just do one traffic strategy at first and then build from there. You’ll look back in a few years and be blown away by how far you’ve come!

      Jason

  8. Jason, I just wanted to add this to my previous comment: Since opening my shop, I really haven’t done any advertising because I didn’t know where to begin, but this information has given me a starting point!

    Again, thank you!

    Jaci

  9. This gives me so much to think about! I am currently reading your book Etsy Power. This concept certainly ties in with what what I’m learning in your book. The truth is, I don’t really know where to begin with marketing my website and learning how to drive traffic through social media. I find it intimidating and time consuming. I like the idea of having a plan and especially the plan of getting one strategy working well before moving on to the next. Perhaps with this step by step process, I can get somewhere!!
Thanks for the wealth of knowledge. It is especially meaningful as I know you and Cinnamon have been in my very shoes!

    Malissa

    • Hi Malissa,

Glad you found value in it – yep – we’ve been there! You’re right – the fact that social media can be time consuming means you’ve got to have a specific plan and goal – so that it doesn’t end up being a total distraction.

      Honored to be of help!

      Jason

  10. I didn’t know it, but this is exactly what I needed to hear at this exact time!! I have often wondered what my next step needs to be to ramp up my online business and THIS IS IT!! No, this information may not be new to seasoned online sellers, but the way Jason presents the information, not only makes sense to me in a way that I can understand and not feel overwhelmed, but the way he communicates is clear and concise and makes me say, “I can do that!” So much of what I hear and read I find to be difficult to implement, but because he breaks the steps down, I feel more confident in taking his information and putting it into practice. Thank God for Jason Miles and his method of teaching!! Finally, someone I can understand and implement!! Thanks!!

    • Denise, awesome! Super glad it was the right message at the right time. Thank you for the kind words. I truly enjoy this stuff and am really excited to see how your business grows as you implement these ideas!

      Jason

  11. I thought your content was good, but I am one of those people who still doesn’t get it. I am on Pinterest, Facebook, and I have my own website, but I am still failing to get the kind of traffic I want to see. How do I go about the whole email campaign? I read your book “Pinterest Power” and I am working to promote myself that way and through facebook. I have even considered going back to etsy, just so that I can get some spill over traffic, but in the jewelry department, it gets expensive to relist all the time, and you have to do that if you want to show up in a search. I also don’t really seem to understand “optimizing” my posts so they show up in organic searches. any suggestions?

    • Hi Valarie,

Thanks for the feedback. My book Email Marketing Power might be of help on the topic of email marketing. As I finish up this ebook I plan on adding a section for how to optimize for organic traffic on Amazon, Etsy, and eBay… so that should help. The Pinterest work will pay off over time.

      Thanks again for the feedback!

      Jason

  12. Boom! That was gold. Thanks for sharing it. I’m sending it to my team right now. I take for granted the actual source of my traffic and just keep feeding the made up traffic funnel I see in my head. Time to revisit and pay attention to what’s working and apply the most of the resources there.

I know you have books on this but what is your best strategy to send traffic to your e-commerce website from Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest?

All the information in this was very valuable for me. Especially from 7:30 onward. Jason, you really do a great job at taking concepts that seem overwhelming and simplifying them down to a format where most people can feel very confident to take action.

    • Hi Mike,

Boom! 🙂 Thanks for the helpful feedback, much appreciated. You know we’re big Death Wish Coffee Fans too!

So, the best (paid) strategy for Facebook is simply boosted posts. I’ve seen some organic Facebook strategies do really well where people post constantly (almost like they do with Twitter) and it works really well, but that’s not our style, but it might be something to try. Best Youtube strategy is probably how-to type videos – and in your case – probably paid YT ads. For Pinterest I think building out coffee related boards and just faithfully pinning is best. Of course – you’ve got MAD love from traditional media sources – I think you guys do a great job getting free media – I’d systematize that as much as possible – and really work it – you guys really are media darlings, which is a huge asset!

Thanks for chatting on my blog with me 🙂 Sorry I couldn’t make it to Indy!

      Jason

  13. Jason,

Thanks again for such a good topic. I like the idea of a workbook to go along witht the book. I have several of your other books and have read part of them but want to implement as I read so they get set down and not picked up again. I think the workbook would help with that.

I just need to get my time organized and then organized the trafic stacking that I am currently doing.

    • Hi Cherie,

Good point – I think the time management piece is definitely a theme in the feedback here – so I should probably add some content on that issue.

      I appreciate you feedback!

      Jason

  14. My website is still very new (through Web.com.) I am still tweaking it. My goal is affiliate marketing through Amazon. I am selling nothing from my site itself. I will be 74 in January and all of this is very new to me. There is just so much out there to learn!! My Pinterest site has been activated about a month. (clewis17903) I am following your Pinterest site and absorbing as much as I can. There are lots of marketing guru’s out there but your name keeps popping up all the time, so I have decided to stick with the best (you). Thank you so much for your contributions to marketing!

    • Hi Carol,

Thank you so much for that compliment, that’s very kind of you. I’m assuming your going to focus on the dog related product niche based on your Pinterest pinboards, I think that could be great. If you begin doing Amazon Affiliate marketing, you could also do affiliate marketing for other dog related products and programs – people are passionate about their puppies!!

Please let me know if I can do anything else to be of help!

      Jason

  15. Great video, but I was wondering something… how would this work for a “widget” seller? I can see how traffic stacking could work if you sell online a certain theme or certain type of product, but how could this work if you sell “everything?” If you mentioned this in the video, I may have missed it.

    • Hey Stephen,

I think you could use Pinterest and have a wide collection of Pinboards with topics like “Kitchen gadgets” “Food I Love” “Amazing Toys” or whatever…topic by topic… that way you build a following of people interested in each niche / topic … and the bigger your Pinterest following gets for each pinboard – the more traffic you can drive to your current or future listings… There are people who have tens of thousands of Pinterest followers and they drive tons of traffic… Just a thought.

    • Hey Stephen,

I’ve been thinking about you and your question all weekend… Here are my thoughts as it relates to Traffic Stacking vis-a-vis widget selling / arbitrage.

So, my basic assumption is that everyone that sells online wants to build a business that has long-term value. Something that they could eventually sell to a bigger company, something that turns into a powerful brand, or something (an operation) that they could pass on to their kids after they retire. Even if the product is very simple, like a craft or art item, the opportunity to create a respected brand is the long-term goal – and it’s a worthy goal. When we talk about our Make-Sell-Grow model, this is what we’re envisioning – this is the ecommerce gospel we’re preaching … make something…sell it online…build a brand/business or sales system.

      But I realize that’s not everyone’s goal.

But it is mine because everything short of that feels like “a job” to me. Creating long-term value, in the form of a brand, business, or sales system, feels like a wiser plan than simply learning to sell online.

So, all that to say, Traffic Stacking is a concept I hope adds value to someone who is trying to build a long-term operating company. The Traffic Stack becomes a sales asset that the business owner can use to grow the business.

So, if I was a widget seller, I would generate a solid income from it, and then brainstorm ways to begin growing a brand or business system that can retain equity and long-term value. You do that by creating your own product, your own customer base, proprietary service, or other business asset. Traffic Stacking would be part of that process.

I hope this longer answer helps – please realize I’m not trying to be judgemental of anyone doing the arbitrage model. But in my view, it should be a stepping stone toward a longer-term strategy.

      • Jason, this makes perfect sense to me. You’ve shared some great and challenging words of wisdom that I’m now wrestling with. Thanks for the reply and for sharing your thoughts.

  16. I really enjoyed your presentation. Every thing you said makes sense. My wife and I have been selling on ebay for 15 years last 12 years full time. We are the top sellers in our category of craft rubber stamps and for the most part have completely relied on ebay for our traffic flow. This year we have begun to focus on facebook, pinterest and flyers with our outgoing product. We have 10,000 plus email addresses, names and addresses of customers from last 4 years and we do nothing with that list. We probably should do that I suppose. With your presentation I like how you focus on having a plan and putting pen to paper. I heard a fact about Harvard grades some time a go where there was a study from 1 year that all the top grads who put there life goals on paper did far better than the ones who did not.You can not achieve your goal if at first you can’t define your goal.
