We use a Canon 300D, and you can find them on Ebay for pretty inexpensive. Here is a link to some:

As we’ve said in our photography posts – upgrading your camera is a key to success. And the funny thing is, you really don’t have to spend very much to get a good product photography camera, (like the 300D), and a good product photography lens, (like this one).

Let me know if you have any questions about camera decisions.

  1. I have a Nikon D60 with the two lenses that came with it (AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G and 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G)
Are those good, or do you recommend another lens?

    Thanks!

  2. It’s hard for us to say – it depends on the age of the lenses and the quality of the glass. They are standard general purpose lenses. The difference between them and a portrait lenses we describe in this post is the f-stop. A portrait lens allows you to get a low f-stop, (in the 1.2 to 1.8 range) as compared to your lenses lowest f-stop, (3.5). So, your lenses are going to perform well (generally) for the type of product photography we’re recommending.

You can actually get a ‘depth of field’ type effect using your 55-200. But you’d have to do it outside. You would do it by scooting back and zooming it in all the way, and then focusing on your doll. The background will be blurred, while the doll is in focus. This is the only way to get your lens to perform a portrait style shot.

    I hope this helps!

  3. I am interested in buying a camera like the one you have Cinnamon and the lens as soon as I can afford to buy a new camera. Right now I am saving towards getting the money to pay for both at the same time.

  4. Great. Just remember to check on EBay and craigslist for the best deals.

  5. Hi Jason.
I’m looking at a new used camera (Canon DSLR 300D per your recommendation), but I noticed that in the specs it states that it is compatible with: Apple Mac OS 9, Apple Mac OS 9.1, Apple Mac OS 9.2, Apple Mac OS X 10.1, Apple Mac OS X 10.2, MS Windows 2000, MS Windows 98, MS Windows 98 SE, MS Windows ME, MS Windows XP.
I’m running MS Office Professional Edition 2003, is this compatible?
When purchasing an old camera is this normally a problem or something to consider? I’ve found the lenses on Amazon, & the camera on eBay, but I don’t want to buy until I’m sure that all this equipment with work with my computer.
I’m so over my head with this computer stuff, but I’m going on faith that this old dog can learn the new tricks you & Cinnamon are teaching…yikes she said registering for a blog on WordPress.com & buying domain name on goDaddy.com.
I hope you approve…Doll Closet Heirlooms. com
    Thanks for your help,
    Chris
